CHAN 2018: SUPER EAGLES JET TO SEMI-FINAL

Nigeria has qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.The home-based Super Eagles battled back from a goal down to defeat Angola 2-1 in extra-time on Sunday in Tangiers.

The home-based Super Eagles yesterday displayed a brave challenge by beating their Angolan counterpart to a 2-1 win to grab the ticket to the semi-finals at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco. This is the second time the home-based Eagles will be making it to the semi-final, since their debut in 2014 in South Africa where they finished third. They will now take on Sudan in the last four. Nigeria has qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing Africa.

After a goal less first half in which both teams missed great chances, the Angola team went ahead in the 55th minute to gain a goal. At first it was looking like the end of the road for team Nigeria until Anthony Okpotu redeemed Nigeria by netting an equalizing goal at the 91st minute. The goal stretched the game into an extra time where Gabriel Okechukwu seized the moment by saving Nigeria with a well-deserved goal.
Meanwhile, President Buhari has congratulated the team for their victory over Angola yesterday. The message was contained in a statement on sunday made available to newsmen by his Senior Special Assistant on Mdeia and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
''President Muhammadu Buhari extends his congratulations to the Super Eagles on the spectacular 2-1 win against Angola in the CHAN quarter-finals match today in Morocco.
''President Buhari, who watched the match in his hotel room in Addis Ababa after a long meeting which started at 8:00am and ended at 5:30pm, wishes them the very best for the upcoming matches,'' the statement read.   



As early as 20 seconds, Eagles striker Okpotu burst through on goal, but he slipped at the vital moment with only the goalkeeper to beat. It was guilt-edged miss by the forward. In the ninth minute, it was the turn of Emeka Atuloma to score but the former Heartland midfielder missed from a corner-kick. There was a terrible blow for Nigeria on 13 minutes when Kalu Orji was forced from the field following an ankle injury. Timothy Danladi took his place.Yusuf Salisu’s boys looked to be heading out of the competition, after Vladimir Va scored for the Angolans. But Anthony Okpotu’s goal sent the game iIn the second half of extra time, Ikechukwu Gabriel netted the winner for NigeriaThe Palancas Negras weren’t afraid to attack and they showed quality and vigour. Lanky defender Stephen Eze made a last ditch clearance to prevent Vladimir Va from scoring in the 19th minute. On the half hour, Eagles keeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa produced a great save to keep out Calesso Manu’s powerful shot from an acute angle.
